No, hold it THIS way!

Apple has addressed the issue of losing phone reception some iPhone 4 users have reported after a day or two of using the device. The official line is that people are holding the phone incorrectly, causing the wraparound antenna to lose its effectiveness. The problem seems to hit phones held in the left hand more often than phones cradled with the right hand.

That's right. The official line is that people are holding it improperly. User error. As in, these-folks-don't-know-how-to-hold-a-phone-itis.

Ridiculous.

How many ways to hold a phone are there? It is World Cup season, so maybe we should use our feet? Maybe we should keep our pinkies extended?

As Steve Martin might say, “Well, excuuuuuuuse meeeeeee!”

The first image that popped into my head when I heard about the Apple fix to the problem is the scene from "Young Frankenstein" in which Igor, played by Marty Feldman and pronounced Eye-gor, tells Dr. Frankenstein, played by Gene Wilder and pronounced Dr. Frahnk-en-shteen, to "walk this way," as they traipse across a railroad-station platform. Wilder starts to follow Feldman, only to be whacked and reprimanded for walking improperly.

"No! Walk THIS way," Igor barks, before demonstrating a hunchbacked, short walking stick style of sashaying.

I can just imagine the next Apple commercial showing the proper way to hold the iPhone 4. It may go something like this, “Hi, I'm an iPhone, and I like to be held a special way. Just wrap your fingers here, being careful not to touch THIS area.” (Oooooh, kinky.)

I think I'll take the easy option, and add the "bumper" case when I get my iPhone 4, as it prevents the dropped-reception issue.
