Northern Nevada inmate hospitalized with medical condition dies

A Clark County man serving 60 years to life at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center died in the prison’s medical facility.

Carlos Ortiz, 53, was sentenced for kidnapping and murder in May 2008, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections. He was convicted of shooting his wife to death in front of their 11-year-old daughter in 2004.

Ortiz was recently hospitalized for a chronic medical condition.

The Carson City coroner’s office responded to the prison, and an autopsy will be performed.
