Officer in shooting ID’d

A Las Vegas police officer who fired a shot at an armed man Monday was identified as Timothy Townley.

The incident occurred about 6:50 p.m. on the 5400 block of Painted Mirage Road, near Ann Road and U.S. Highway 95, after a man called 911 and said he wanted to commit "suicide by cop," police said.

Officers arrived and found Roger Fitzpatrick, 42, standing outside his home holding a handgun, police said.

The officers ordered Fitzpatrick to drop the gun, and he responded by firing two shots in the air before aiming the weapon toward police, authorities said. Townley fired one shot and missed, but the gunman immediately surrendered, police said.

Fitzpatrick was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and two counts of firing a firearm in public.

Townley, 25, has been with the department since November 2001.
