Pahrump man in shootout with police kills himself

The man who fired at a Nye County sheriff's deputy killed himself during a standoff with authorities on Tuesday.

Daniel S. Dixon, 24, of Pahrump, was wanted for attempted murder of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a news release from the Nye County sheriff's office, Dixon was the passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation about 9:30 a.m. Monday. An altercation ensued, during which Dixon fired a gun at a deputy, who was not injured. The deputy returned fire and Dixon fled on foot. The driver of the vehicle was questioned and released.

About 3 p.m. Tuesday authorities found Dixon hiding in a storage shed near Murphy Street and Fritz Lane. He refused to surrender and sheriff's deputies used less-than-lethal weapons on him, which were not effective, police said.

Dixon pointed a gun at the deputies, and they returned fire, wounding him. He still refused to surrender and shot himself, according to the sheriff's office. The names of the deputies involved have not been released. They were placed on routine paid administrative leave.
