Patrol seeks witnesses to U.S. 95 pipe spill

The Nevada Highway Patrol is looking for witnesses to a bizarre eight-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 95 early Friday morning.

Those involved in the crash told investigators that a truck spilled several pipes in the northbound lanes of the highway between Boulder Highway and Charleston Boulevard shortly before 6 a.m.

But when troopers arrived on the scene 11 minutes later, they found only one pipe on the roadway, about 1,000 to 1,500 feet behind the accident scene, trooper Kevin Honea said. And investigators don't believe that pipe was involved in the accident.

"It's a little caper," Honea said of the missing pipes.

The person driving the truck might have stopped after the incident to clean up the pipes, Honea said, but nobody reported seeing that happen.

There were six crashes involving eight vehicles as drivers swerved to avoid the pipes or were struck by the pipes, Honea said. Several vehicles had flat tires.

One person involved in the accident was taken to University Medical Center with undetermined injuries, Honea said.

Investigators are looking for the truck's driver and for the owner of the pipe that was found.

"We did contact a couple of concrete pumping companies for the pipe that was way south of the crash," Honea said, but those leads weren't successful.

Honea said the patrol is asking anybody with information about the incident to call 432-5205.
