Police had prior call to home of airman in murder-suicide

North Las Vegas police reported Monday that officers responded to an attempted- suicide call at the home of a Nellis Air Force Base airman four months before he was involved in a murder-suicide.

North Las Vegas police Sgt. Tim Bedwell said officers were called to Matthew Klinkenberg's apartment on Oct. 20. Bedwell would not say who attempted suicide, but the airman's father, Art Klinkenberg of Utah, has said that his son attempted suicide in October.

Police went to an apartment at Craig Ranch Villas, 370 Casa Norte Drive, on Feb. 20 after a friend of his wife reported that the 25-year-old man was holding a gun to the head of his wife, 23-year-old Crystal Klinkenberg. The airman retreated into his apartment when police arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m.

After a two-hour standoff, SWAT team officers entered the apartment and found the couple dead.

According to Nellis Air Force Base, Matthew Klinkenberg was being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder because of events that happened during a five-month tour of Iraq between 2005 and 2006.
