Police make arrest in fatal shooting at NLV bar

Las Vegas police arrested a 31-year-old man Wednesday in connection with a fatal Friday night shooting at a North Las Vegas bar.

David Ulysses Shumate was charged with murder with a deadly weapon after he surrendered to police and admitted to shooting 26-year-old Alphonso J. Green. Shumate claimed the shooting was in self-defense.

But Las Vegas police detectives believe Shumate went to the Seven Seas Restaurant & Lounge on Lake Mead Boulevard near Martin Luther King Boulevard shortly before midnight to find Green and kill him, according to Shumate's arrest report.

Shumate and Green had been in a dispute earlier in the night during a birthday party at the Elks Lodge, 902 W. Owens Ave., near Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to the arrest report.

Afterward, Shumate told police he went to his home to get his gun and went to the Seven Seas, the arrest report states.

Witnesses saw Shumate shoot Green as Green walked out of the bar, including once when Green was on the ground, according to the report. Green returned fire with one shot from his 9 mm handgun. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he died.

Shumate fled and turned himself over to police on Monday, according to police.
