Police officer who shot, killed suspect is identified

The Metropolitan Police Department identified the patrol officer involved in Thursday morning's fatal shooting as Blake T. Penny.

Penny, 32, who has been with the department since July 1998, was still hospitalized Saturday evening with the leg wound he received while exchanging gunfire with a suspect near Durango High School.

The officer is expected to fully recover, according to police.

The suspect was involved in an altercation and fired shots at a strip club before leading police on a high-speed chase. His vehicle overturned near Hacienda Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard.

As Penny approached the vehicle, the man got out of it and fired several shots at the officer, hitting him in the right leg.

Penny returned fire, killing the man, whose identity has not been released.
