Appointed U.S. Senators from Nevada

1912: First appointed senator was W.A. Massey. He was appointed on July 1 to succeed George Nixon, who died on June 5. Both were Republicans.

1918: Charles Henderson appointed on Jan. 12 to replace Francis Newlands, who died on Dec. 24, 1917. Both were Democrats.

1940: Key Pittman died Nov. 10, five days after being re-elected. Berkeley Bunker (D) appointed on Nov. 26 to full the Senate seat until the next general election. Both were Democrats.

1942: James Scrugham, a Democrat, defeated Bunker in the primary. Bunker resigned Dec. 6 to provide senatorial seniority.

1945: Edward Carville, a Democrat, appointed on July 24 to replace Scrugham who died on June 23.

1954: Patrick McCarran, a Democrat, died while campaigning on Sept. 28. Ernest Brown, a Republican, was appointed on Oct. 1 to succeed McCarran. Lost general election to Alan Bible, a Democrat, and resigned on Dec. 1 to give Bible seniority. Bible was appointed on Dec. 2.

1974: Bible resigned on Dec. 17 to give newly elected Paul Laxalt, a Republican, seniority. Laxalt was appointed Dec. 18.
