Put down the phone and cross the street, politician says

I read a story today about a New York politician who introduced legislation to prohibit people from using their mobile phones while they are walking across a street. You read that right. Walking.

State Sen. Carl Kruger's bill would make it illegal to "talk on phones, read BlackBerrys, listen to iPods or use any other electronic device while crossing the street." Violators would be fined $100.

How about starting with banning mobile phone use while driving?

Yes, there have been some well-publicized cases of people being killed while distracted using phones, music players or other portable technology. But I'm pretty sure folks have been injured while walking and reading a book or newspaper, too.

For the record, whenever I'm walking with the radio or music playing in ear, I use just one earbud. This lets me hear what's going on around me, especially noise from vehicular traffic.

Come on, Sen. Kruger. You shouldn't be passing laws like this to protect people from themselves. If you want to limit something, limit the behavior of people who endanger others.

Let the tuned in stay tuned out, if they want to be. It just might thin the herd
