Raid uncovered scores of weapons, police say

About 85 firearms were recovered from Boulder City chief constable Larry Markotay's home, office and personal storage facilities in a raid last week, Boulder City police said.

Boulder City police officers and agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms executed search warrants Thursday, according to information released Monday.

ATF and DEA agents helped because the "quantity and type of firearms appear to exceed the operational requirements" of the constable's office and because of "credible information" that Markotay had large quantities of prescription medication, a news release said.

Of the firearms recovered, 35 were rifles, and six were shotguns. At least two of the rifles were automatic. One of the firearms had an "obliterated serial number," the release said.

Although Markotay is permitted to order firearms for law enforcement use as a constable, including automatic weapons, records of the transactions are missing or destroyed, the release said.

Officers also found more than 24 police badges from various agencies, including a Boulder City police captain's badge. Officers also found several items of drug paraphernalia, the release said.

Markotay, 42, had been arrested and charged Wednesday with several felonies, including burglary with use of a deadly weapon, three counts of grand larceny with use of a firearm and two counts of possession of stolen property.

A Boulder City police arrest report said that he broke into his ex-girlfriend's home and took several firearms, which he had given her as gifts while they were dating.

He will not face additional charges from Boulder City police, Lt. Dan Jennings said. It's unclear whether Markotay will face federal charges after Thursday's raid.

Police said the guns from Markotay's ex-girlfriend's house were retrieved from Markotay's vehicle after a Feb. 22 accident involving the constable. He later was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of an accident.
