Reno Air Races officials racing to act on NTSB recommendations

RENO -- Reno Air Races officials are facing an accelerated schedule and a steep learning curve to act on recommendations issued by federal investigators following a horrific crash last year that killed 11 people and seriously injured more than 70.

Race chief Michael Houghton said Wednesday that in nine weeks, 30 or more pilots are due to arrive for an air racing school at Reno Stead Airport. That's the same place where a modified World War II-vintage racing aircraft crashed last September into a spectator area.

The June 13-16 training event is dubbed the Pylon Racing Seminar. It'll be the first time new and veteran racing pilots are expected to fly by rules tailored from suggestions the National Transportation Safety Board unveiled Tuesday.
