Reno railroad depot added to historical places register

RENO - The Southern Pacific-Amtrak Railroad Depot in downtown Reno has been added to the National Register for Historic Places.

The depot on North Center Street was built in 1868 and played a key role in the city's creation and development into a transportation center in the West.

It was nominated for inclusion on the national registry by the city, which announced Tuesday that the National Park Service approved its status.

T he City Council has been awarded a nearly $30,000 grant from the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office to begin the planning phase of the project.
