School police officer wounds youth

Las Vegas police are investigating a shooting by a Clark County school police officer that wounded a teenage boy Tuesday in a residential area near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway.

Two school police officers were investigating a possible gang fight about 1:30 p.m., when they found a group of five to seven male juveniles near the intersection of Barbara Avenue and Rexford Drive.

One teen threw an unknown object at the officers and reached down as if to grab a weapon, school police Lt. Ken Young said. One officer then fired a shot and hit the teen in the leg.

It’s not yet known if the boy was armed.

The juveniles fled the scene.

The boy who was shot in the leg checked himself into a hospital about 2 p.m.

Fremont Middle School, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave., was locked down for 30 minutes after the incident.
