State employment director resigns

Larry Mosley, director of the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, resigned from his job on Thursday, according to a statement from Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Mosley was appointed in 2007 by former Gov. Jim Gibbons. As director, Mosley led a department with a budget of about $900 million and a staff of about 800 people, according to the department website.

The department is in charge of handling unemployment insurance benefit payments, a difficult task as Nevada suffers though a crippling recession and record unemployment.

"I thank Larry for his service to Nevadans during arguably the most difficult period in Nevada's history," Sandoval said in an email announcing the resignation. "I appreciate his commitment to workforce development, equal rights and getting Nevadans working again."

Sandoval said Dennis Perea will be interim director until a full time replacement is appointed.

Sandoval spokeswoman Mary-Sarah Kinner said the resignation is effective July 1.

Kinner didn't say why Mosley resigned. A spokeswoman for the employment department did not return a call and email asking for comment from Mosley.
