Students will decide the next state medallion design

Editor’s Note: Nevada 150 is a yearlong series highlighting the people, places and things that make up the history of the state.

We’ve had a miner, and the state seal, and now it’s up to Nevada’s schoolchildren to choose the design for the third medallion celebrating Nevada’s 150th anniversary of statehood.

But students had better vote fast — the deadline to participate is Wednesday.

“I am so excited for all the elementary-age students in Nevada to get involved in our state’s birthday party by helping choose the design for our third sesquicentennial medallion,” Lt. Gov. and Nevada 150 Chairman Brian Krolicki said. “One of the best things I get to do as lieutenant governor and chairman of the commission is find ways for students to personally participate in this historic year. So I hope all of the classes get involved, learn a little more about our great state, vote on their favorite design, enter the contest and maybe win a medallion!”

Students are being asked to choose an individual element or combined group of elements that they would like to see represented on the third medallion.

The actual design will then be developed from the element or group of three elements receiving the most votes. Each tally sheet received by the lieutenant governor’s office will be entered in a drawing. The winning class will receive a copper medallion stamped with the winning design for each student and teacher in the class.

Individual elements include: bighorn sheep, Hoover Dam, Liberty Bell (the first slot machine) and Lake Tahoe.

Group of elements include: Rugged Nevada: bighorn sheep, bristlecone pine and Mount Wheeler; Nevada’s Early Heritage: petroglyph, tule duck decoy and basket; Prehistoric Nevada: bristlecone pine, Ichthyosaur and desert tortoise; and Sign-Up for Nevada: Welcome to Las Vegas sign, Reno arch and Wendover Will.

Sales of the commemorative medallions help fund the Nevada 150 events and yearlong celebration. Four different medallions will be released at different dates throughout the year for purchase.
