Surgery for Rogers successful

University system Chancellor Jim Rogers was recovering Thursday from successful surgery to treat bladder cancer in Los Angeles, said his secretary, Jo Ann Prevetti.

"Everything went well," Prevetti said in an e-mail. The cancer did not appear to have spread, she said.

Rogers, 69, was diagnosed with bladder cancer in December during a routine checkup. After consulting local specialists and doctors outside Nevada, he settled on receiving treatment at the University of Southern California.

The surgery, in which the bladder is removed and part of the colon is used to create a new bladder, was performed by Dr. Eila Skinner, associate professor of clinical oncology at USC.

Rogers has said he will work from home over the next four to six weeks as he recovers.

He is the owner of Sunbelt Communications, which owns the local NBC affiliate, KVBC-TV, Channel 3.
