Susan Martinovich to retire as transportation director

CARSON CITY -- State Transportation Director Susan Martinovich announced in a staff meeting Tuesday that she will retire this summer after 28 years with her 1,750-employee agency.

Martinovich, 51, an engineer who began her professional career as a bridge and highway designer, started working for the Transportation Department as a college student. Her father was a longtime employee of the department.

In January 2007 she became the first female to head the department and recently completed a year term as the first woman to head the American Association of Highway Transportation officials.
