Suspect arrested in slaying

A man wanted in connection with the February slaying of a 28-year-old man was picked up by border patrol officers in San Diego and faces extradition back to Southern Nevada for the homicide, Las Vegas police said Tuesday.

Homicide Sgt. Steve Naegele said Angel Santana, 27, is in custody in Southern California after being detained on his way back from Mexico.

Police accuse Santana of being the triggerman in the Feb. 1 shooting in which 28-year-old Atsku Tekle was slain.

Tekle and two other people were walking across the street about 6 p.m. in the area of Twain Avenue and Swenson Street when each of them was shot, police said.

Naegele said Santana is expected to be extradited to Southern Nevada.

A police report on the incident didn't reveal a motive for the slaying, but said several people witnessed the shooting or saw Santana at the scene.

In addition to one count of murder, Santana was also charged with two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.
