Suspects in ID counterfeiting targeted casinos, police say

SPARKS -- Police say suspects arrested at a Sparks casino in a suspected ID counterfeiting ring targeted Reno-area casinos and big box stores like Walmart and Sam's Club.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that 10 people arrested at John Ascuaga's Nugget on March 23 had checked into the Sparks casino 12 days earlier.

Authorities allege the group is connected to a Bay Area counterfeiting ring that made phony checks, credit cards and identifications.

Police said they used their ill-gotten gains for gambling, drugs and shopping trips, and were traveling in a black Infiniti stolen from California.

Court files also said police received a tip that some of the Nugget guests were leaving large trash bags for housekeeping that contained shredded checks and receipts.
