Tips sought in assault on 60-year-old

Las Vegas police are seeking assistance from the public in identifying who assaulted a 60-year-old man found badly beaten in an alley near Las Vegas and Oakey boulevards in November.

Police have identified the victim as Paul Schmidt, who is believed to be homeless. Lt. George Castro said Schmidt is on life support at the University Medical Center and in a coma. Police found him about 4:15 a.m. Nov. 30.

Castro said Schmidt was identified through fingerprints because he has been arrested for "petty offenses."

Police have not found any family or friends of Schmidt's.

Castro said police dogs found Schmidt when officers were investigating a convenience store robbery. Castro said there is no evidence the robbery was connected to Schmidt's assault.

Castro said police have hit a wall in their investigation. "Hopefully, someone in the community can say, 'Hey, listen, this is not right. We want to step forward and assist.' "

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
