Trial delayed in child sex assault case
The man accused of videotaping himself sexually assaulting a young girl had his trial postponed after new videos surfaced allegedly showing the man having sex with an adult woman.
District Judge Jennifer Togliatti Monday agreed to allow Chester Stiles to go to trial in January or February after his attorneys requested more time to examine the new evidence.
Stiles, 38, had been scheduled to go to trial today.
Several weeks ago, authorities discovered a video believed to be a copy of the VHS tape found in the desert showing Stiles sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl, according to court documents. Authorities also found a video showing Stiles having sex with his son's mother, court records state. When interviewed, the woman in the tape told FBI agents that she wasn't aware that someone made the video of her and Stiles, court records state.
Authorities found the videos in October 2007 in a storage shed Stiles used. Authorities reviewed the videos in October and discovered the new footage.
Stiles is facing multiple counts of sexual assault of a minor and lewdness with a minor. He was the subject of a nationwide manhunt in 2007 after a man brought a videotape to authorities who say it shows Stiles sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl.
The girl was later identified and found safe and healthy in Las Vegas. She has no memory of the incident, authorities said.
Henderson police arrested Stiles in October 2007 during a routine traffic stop at Sunset Road and Green Valley Parkway.
