UNLV-Virginia Tech: Rebels capture 76 Classic title with 71-59 win over Hokies

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Chace Stanback had 17 points and seven rebounds and UNLV used defense to defeat Virginia Tech 71-59 tonight in the championship of the 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Stanback was named Most Valuable Player of the eight-team tournament. The Rebels (6-0) withstood a long-range shooting barrage from Hokies guard Malcolm Delaney, who made 7 of 9 3-pointers and scored 30 points.
Quintrell Thomas and Tre’Von Willis each finished with 14 points and Anthony Marshall scored 10 points for UNLV.
Willis’ drive and feed to Derrick Jasper for a dunk gave the Rebels a 57-47 lead with 8:27 remaining.
But Stanback went to the bench with his fourth foul, Delaney made a 3 and the Hokies rallied to within five points.
Willis’ 3 extended UNLV’s edge to 62-54 with 5:02 left.
The Rebels led 37-30 at halftime. Delaney had 12 points for Virginia Tech (4-2).
HALFTIME REPORT
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Chace Stanback scored nine points and UNLV used full-court pressure to run to a 37-30 halftime lead over Virginia Tech in the championship game of the 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Senior guard Malcolm Delaney had 12 points for the Hokies (4-1).
Anthony Marshall scored eight points and Tre’Von Willis had seven for the Rebels (5-0). After a steal and layup by Marshall, Willis hit a 3-pointer to put UNLV on top 27-21 with 8:08 remaining.
The Rebels led 31-21 before Virginia Tech answered with a 9-0 run that was capped by a Delaney 3.
