Victim’s dropped cellphone leads to rape arrest

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Authorities say a Southern California rape suspect is in jail because the victim accidentally dropped her cellphone in his car during the back seat sex attack.

El Segundo police Lt. Ray Garcia says 30-year-old Charles Lee Kelly, a security guard who was in uniform, offered a woman a ride on Monday night and drove to a parking lot and raped her at knifepoint.

The Torrance Daily Breeze reports the victim escaped from the car, leaving her clothes and her phone behind. Police say the cellphone fell into a slot in the back seat door and Kelly didn't notice it.

Investigators tracked the cellphone's signal to the car outside Kelly's Inglewood home.

He was arrested and booked for investigation of rape and false imprisonment.
