Volunteers sought to assist with event for homeless

Organizers of next month's Project Homeless Connect are seeking volunteers and sponsors for the event, which aims to help thousands of the valley's homeless find housing and jobs.

The daylong event, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 8 at Cashman Center, brings together dozens of city, county and social services agencies that help the homeless.

Those who attend can get free food and clothing, haircuts, housing referrals, job placement aid, dental screenings and other services. Judges will be on site to hear misdemeanor cases and process warrants to help homeless people deal with any legal issues.

About 2,600 people attended last year's Project Homeless Connect, according to Clark County.

Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help set up, take down and work the event, which is organized by the Nevada Homeless Alliance. Donations may be made to the Homeless Trust Fund, a nonprofit account.

An estimated 11,500 homeless people live in the Las Vegas Valley.
