Week in Review: Reporters’ Notebook

Tuesday's attempted rescue of a cat stuck on a power pole was all in a day's work for Kyle Morris.

The NV Energy lineman spends his days trying to solve problems, usually electrical, rather than feline. When the cat got spooked and ran away, it was on to the next job for Morris.

"We gotta go rescue some bad transformers now," he said.

OVERHEARD ON THE SCANNER: "They're extremely busy. It's senior ditch day today."

In a school board discussion about streamlining contracts, President Carolyn Edwards said contract templates cannot possibly cover every circumstance. She cited Goodsprings School in rural southwest Clark County. It needs a leach field to dispose of septic tank waste.

"No one else will have that circumstance but Goodsprings," she said. "There are certain circumstances that are unique."

And thank goodness for that.

Parking was on the minds of everyone who showed up to support Steve Evans when he filed to run for Las Vegas City Council. They met downtown at 4:20 p.m., when parking meters were still in service.

"What? You have to pay your parking tickets before you file?" a crowd member asked.

"No," another said. "You get your parking tickets while you file."

Las Vegas City Manager Betsy Fretwell used a Billie Jean King quote for a report projecting the city's fiscal crisis could end: "Champions keep playing until they get it right."

"I got a better one," said Mayor Oscar Goodman. "Vince Lombardi. 'When the going gets tough, the tough get going.' That takes the place of the Billie Jean King quote. I'm the mayor."

Sources attribute the quote to JFK's father, or to football legend Knute Rockne. But, really, nothing beats the baseline in Billy Ocean's 1980s hit, "When the Going Gets Tough," a tough song to get out of your head.
