Week in Review: Reporters’ Notebook

Sen. Harry Reid's call for an end to legal brothels in Nevada may not get much traction from state lawmakers, but it definitely got the attention of two appliance salesmen at a Las Vegas department store on Wednesday.

One of the men said the only thing Reid accomplished with his remarks on Tuesday was to draw national attention to Nevada's brothel industry. "Just keep your mouth shut, Harry," the man urged.

His co-worker said that if the brothels close there will be no reason to visit the rural counties anymore.

"What's the point of going hunting?" he said.

Outdoorsmen won't be the only ones upset if Reid succeeds in shutting down the state's legal bordellos.

As one e-mailer writes, "The truck drivers will be up in arms!"

Consider the most high-profile candidates for Las Vegas mayor.

Larry Brown moved here from Boston. Katherine Duncan left Arkansas for Boston and then moved here.

Carolyn Goodman grew up in New York City, and Chris Giunchigliani is from Italy by way of Chicago.

Then there's Victor Chaltiel, who was born in Tunisia, moved to France and then finally to the United States.

Steve Ross, though, is a native Nevadan.

Which makes the group representative of Southern Nevada. Almost all of them are from somewhere else.

At a recent candidate forum, Goodman and Ross shared a microphone. At one point, Goodman started answering a question and discovered that the microphone wasn't on.

Referring to Ross, she said, "This man is turning me off."
