WEEK IN REVIEW: Reporters’ notebook

Those NASCAR drivers sure are fast.

Bally Technologies was promoting its new slot machine based on the popular sport during last week's Global Gaming Expo. Company officials set up media interviews with NASCAR star Clint Bowyer, one of several drivers whose image is depicted on the slot machine. Bowyer even participated in the G2E ribbon cutting.

However, when it came time for the interviews, Bowyer had already sped away from the Sands Expo & Convention Center. Maybe he wanted to beat the traffic near the Strip.

And now for the weather.

You may have heard last week about the early season snow that fell in places where that sort of thing happens: Colorado, North Dakota, Minnesota and so forth.

What got less play was the contrasting weather in Death Valley, 100 miles west of Las Vegas. Triple digits are common there even into mid-October, but on Monday the mercury hit 113.

That was the hottest October temperature ever recorded at the world's hottest spot.

On the upside, there was nothing to shovel.

When President Barack Obama delivered pizzas to a local campaign office on Monday, it led to an avalanche of media calls to the source of the pies, Henderson's Settebello Pizzeria Napoletana.

Employees there were interrogated about everything, from the toppings to the price, down to the penny.

But there was one question a manager at Settebello was politically savvy enough not to answer: Did the presidential pizza purchase include a tip?

After a brief pause, the woman said, "I'm not sure that's something I should talk about."

BONUS TWEET: @FireMeElmo (post-debate parody) Elmo not proud of last night. Elmo drank two gallons of chocolate milk. Elmo never want to drink again.
