WEEK IN REVIEW: Reporters’ notebook

Exactly 65 years after he became the first human to break the sound barrier, test pilot Chuck Yeager was at Nellis Air Force Base to mark the occasion with another supersonic flight.

After landing safely in an F-15D Eagle with 30-year-old Capt. David Vincent at the controls, the 89-year-old living legend offered some advice to young pilots: "You shouldn't depend on anybody to tell you how to do your job," Yeager said. "If you're not good enough to do it without prompting, you better quit."

Tuesday was National Boss Day, and it was a rough one for Sheriff Tony DeMeo, boss of the Nye County Sheriff's Office.

First the police union filed court papers seeking to stop him from opening a new jail in Pahrump. Then DeMeo had to sit through a County Commission meeting that included a bleak report about his department's radio equipment and a vote by the commissioners to refer him to the state attorney general's office for possible prosecution over an overspent budget.

"Yesterday was dump-on-Tony day," DeMeo said on Wednesday.

He said it reminded him of a video clip he saw on Tuesday of a boss being dunked in a dunk tank by his employees for National Boss Day.

DeMeo said he pointed the video out to his wife and told her, "That's like my day. But at least that guy has clean water. Nobody has urinated in it yet."
