Woman dies in boating accident on Colorado River

Boat propeller injuries killed one person and hospitalized another on the Colorado River north of Lake Havasu on Saturday.

Officials from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in California responded to the 4 p.m. incident reported at a small sandbar.

Detective Jimmy Trahan said Jorge Diaz, 31, of Newhall, Calif., was trying to back his boat into deeper water when its propeller struck a woman who was wading behind the vessel. The woman, Martha Acevado, 30, of Sylmar, was declared dead at the scene.

Trahan said James Diaz, 27, of Newhall, was severely injured when he jumped from the boat to rescue Acevado and was cut by the same propeller. The younger Diaz was transported to Las Vegas where he was listed in serious but stable condition at University Medical Center.

The elder Diaz was taken into custody and booked into jail on charges of manslaughter and operating a watercraft under the influence of alcohol.
