Woman sentenced in baby boy’s death
A Las Vegas woman who had a blood-alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit when she was involved in an October 2009 crash that killed a 10-month-old boy was sentenced Thursday to eight to 20 years in prison.
A jury in May found Vickie Duran, 42, guilty of three felonies, including driving under the influence of alcohol causing death, leaving the scene of an accident and child endangerment.
The crash occurred on Nellis Boulevard, near Sahara Avenue when Duran, driving a 2003 Toyota Sequoia, rear-ended a 1999 Honda, driven by Claudia Zepeda.
Zepeda's 10-month old son, Esteban Cordova-Zepeda, was in a car seat in the rear of the Honda. Cordova-Zepeda was transported to University Medical Center after the crash, where he died.
Duran attempted to flee the scene of the crash but was detained by a witness, authorities said.
