LETTERS: Sandoval didn’t campaign on tax hikes

To the editor:

Enough with Glenn Cook’s lovefest for Gov. Brian Sandoval (“One giant step for K-12 education,” June 7 Review-Journal). The conclusion of Mr. Cook’s June 7 column is that Gov. Sandoval’s national political prospects are not damaged by his gargantuan tax hikes, because he supported school choice legislation. I beg to differ.

Most notably, Gov. Sandoval didn’t campaign on tax increases, all while his minions were crafting a tax-hike plan during the entire campaign season. Gov. Sandoval’s actual campaign consisted of ribbon-cuttings, crisp suits and good grooming. He acted directly against the will of the voters, who recently shot down tax ballot measures.

Mr. Cook points out that there was no deal with Democrats to trade higher taxes for school choice. So in other words, the tax increases that got passed were simply an unforced error by Gov. Sandoval. Further, if the school choice legislation was so great, then why did Gov. Sandoval think he had to dump so much money into public education?

I believe the only way to save Gov. Sandoval’s political career is for him to switch to the Democratic Party, where he clearly belongs.
