Office of the presidency deserves our respect

To the editor:

What kind of country do we live in these days? The chairman of the Republican National Committee mocks our president for having won the Nobel Peace Prize? Are Republicans so full of hatred toward President Obama that they cannot recognize when America has been awarded one of the most prestigious awards in the world?

I lived through the Nixon Watergate mess, and despite my negative feelings toward Mr. Nixon, I still respected the office that he held. Likewise for George W. Bush.

A majority of Americans cast their votes to put Mr. Obama into office. He is the president. Even if one disagrees with him, he should at least show him the respect due the office he holds. Or maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

Prize worthy

To the editor:

I've been thinking of inventing stable metallic hydrogen (the Holy Grail of physics). In fact, I've given a few speeches here and there during the past 10 months about how great things will be for the comity of nations once I get around to doing something to invent it. Would you please refer me to the suitable point of contact at the Norwegian Nobel Committee?

I'm confident, based upon its recent announcement concerning President Obama and its annual peace prize, that my intentions qualify me to win the physics prize. And for your kind referral, I'll be sure to invite you along when I accept my award.

Thanking you in advance.

Senseless wars

To the editor:

It is estimated that 36 million Americans today live in poverty, which translates to 11.7 percent of our population of 307 million. Why, then, are we sending aid to foreign countries and fueling senseless wars when the money could have been used to help our less fortunate?

America must stop acting like the world's policeman. Let each country decide its own form of government. We should not be so obdurate as to shove democracy on another nation.

We ought to look back and learn from our past mistakes. What did we accomplish in the Korean War? Then came Vietnam, when we foolishly went in after the French pulled out. Iraq is undoubtedly a disaster. Now we have Afghanistan. Didn't the Russians pull out some decades ago? Can't we ever learn, or do we have some form of attention deficit disorder?
