Skills assessment for fourth graders

Are you as smart as a fourth grader?

The following are some of the tasks a fourth grader is expected to perform on a first trimester interim assessment text, the results of which are shared with parents along with a percentage grade for each item. Teachers and parents are encouraged to target areas in which a child is lagging.

English Language Arts

-- Decode words in text using phonics and structural analysis through: base words; suffixes; prefixes; compound words.

-- Apply alphabetic order to locate words in resources.

-- Explain the main idea supported by evidence.

-- Make connections to self, other text, and/or the world.

-- Identify and explain the use of; bold--faced words; underlined words; highlighted words; italicized words.

-- Describe a main idea based on evidence.

-- Make connections to self, other text, and/or the world.

-- Edit capitalization for: beginnings of sentences; months; days of the week; proper nouns; initials; titles.

-- Edit sentences for: complete sentences; combining sentences; compound sentences; complex sentences.

Math

-- Place Value: Identify and use place value positions of whole numbers to one million.

-- Comparing and Ordering: Read, write, compare, and order whole numbers; Read and write number words.

-- Counting: Count by multiples of a given number; Explain relationships between skip counting, repeated addition, and multiples.

-- Estimating and Estimation Strategies: Estimate to determine the reasonableness of an answer in mathematical and practical situations.

-- Computation: Add and subtract multi--digit numbers; Multiply and divide multi--digit numbers by a one--digit whole number with regrouping, including monetary amounts as decimals.

-- Solving Problems and Number Theory: Generate and solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems using whole numbers in practical situations.

-- Patterns: Identify, describe, and represent patterns and relationships in the number system, including arithmetic and geometric sequences.

-- Money: Determine totals for monetary amounts in practical situations; Use money notation to add and subtract given monetary amounts.
