A story about new Las Vegas Councilman Stavros Anthony in Thursday’s Las Vegas Review-Journal contained an incorrect council vote tally on a proposal to include in the minutes the fact that the state Taxation Department had approved the city’s plan to seek $276 million to build a new city hall. The vote was 5-1, with Anthony opposed.

Man awaits extradition in slaying

A 25-year-old reputed gang member was arrested in New Mexico on Tuesday and awaits extradition to Southern Nevada in connection with the slaying of a 21-year-old man beaten to death during a gang initiation known as “jumping in,” U.S. Marshals said.

Super Summer Theatre has emerged as one of our top-performance venues, but it hasn’t gotten there easily. Indications are that the people who have fought for progress have had to battle an authoritative board that has more authority than common sense.

Lobbying contracts

As a member of the Board of Regents, Steve Sisolak was used to being a lone voice of common sense and fiscal restraint. While his peers rushed to dump tax money by the truckload on a revolving door of already-overpaid higher education administrators, he always stopped to ask whether taxpayers and students were getting anything of comparable benefit in return. For his efforts, he routinely found himself on the wrong side of 11-2 and 12-1 votes.
