Extreme heat and dryness led to a host of new records in 2017, including a rainless streak that started in September. 2017 ranked as the warmest year on record in Las Vegas, with an average temperature of 72.3 degrees. The high of 117 on June 20 tied the mark for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Las Vegas. The valley suffered through its driest fall ever and finished the year on a record run of 109 straight days without precipitation. Despite the long stretch without rain, 2017 ranked as the just 18th driest year on record in Las Vegas.

The Vegas Golden Knights announced they have signed forward Jonathan Marchessault to a 6-year contract extension worth an average of $5 million. Marchessault has tallied a team-high 37 points this season. Marchessault ranks in the top-25 in the NHL in scoring, and his 22 assists are a career-high. Last season, Marchessault recorded his first 30-goal season with the Florida Panthers. “Since we all came here, we just feel like part of a big family and we love this city,” Marchessault said.

The demographics of Southern Nevada are growing increasingly young, diverse and wealthy. “The diversification of the types of companies in Las Vegas has created a larger workforce pool,” said Jason Bruckman, vice president of workforce recruitment in Las Vegas for national staffing company Eastridge Workforce Solutions. “I’ve seen the demographic trend skew to a younger workforce.” The transplants making Las Vegas their home today are also younger and bringing in higher median household incomes. “Two early causes for the higher wage appear to be higher wages in the geographies of origin and the fact that we are attracting a workers to fill higher wage positions,” Aguero said.
