This year has flown by, and just like that, Christmas trees will be arriving at all Star Nursery Locations! Before you head out to find your perfect holiday centerpiece, let’s talk about where these beautiful trees come from and how to keep them fresh and fragrant throughout the season.

The Journey from the Pacific Northwest
Our trees are grown on specialized “tree farms” in the Pacific Northwest, primarily northern Oregon and southern Washington. This cool, damp climate is ideal for Christmas Tree growing. It’s a multi-year process, much like any other crop, with trees growing from seedlings to a harvest-ready size, over five to seven years. During this time, they’re not only manicured into the perfect Christmas Tree shape but are also helping the environment by reducing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. The important thing to remember is that you are not contributing to deforestation. These trees were specifically grown to be your holiday centerpiece!
Star Nursery carries three types of Christmas Trees, each offering its own unique characteristics:
- Douglas Fir: Our most popular choice, known for its traditional, classic fir appearance, smell, and affordability.
- Noble Fir: More formal-looking with stiffer branches (ideal for heavy ornaments) and shorter, plump needles.
- Nordmann Fir: A unique, whimsical appearance, known for its long-lasting freshness. Its two-toned flat needles are dark green on top and silver-gray on the underside.
Nostalgic Norman asks: “I want to create lasting memories for my grandchildren this Christmas, which tree will fill my home with fragrance?” For that classic, unmistakable holiday aroma that creates lasting memories, I recommend the Douglas Fir. Its natural, fragrant scent is what people associate most with Christmas.
Keeping Your Tree Fresh and Safe
- The Fresh Cut & Stand: When you purchase your tree, bring your stand (or buy one!). We will make a fresh cut on the trunk base to maximize water absorption and help you secure the tree so it stands straight. Place it in water immediately when you get home!
- Placement: Avoid placing your tree near a heat source (like a fireplace or a south/west-facing window) or air vents, as this will dry it out quickly.
- Hydration: Always ensure your tree stand has water and check water levels daily. A fresh-cut tree will drink a lot, especially at first.
Finally, please recycle your tree! Trees left for regular trash pickup end up in a landfill. Instead, recycle it into mulch for our community parks and gardens. Visit SpringsPreserve.org for a list of convenient drop-off locations.
Our fresh-cut trees will continue to arrive almost daily. Because of the popularity of some varieties and sizes, I strongly recommend shopping early for the best selection!
