51s fail to cash in on errors in one-run loss to Portland
Chip Ambres' two-run triple in the sixth inning lifted the Portland Beavers to a 3-2 Pacific Coast League victory over the 51s on Friday night at PGE Park in Portland, Ore.
Ambres' hit was one of only five for the Beavers (19-20), but four went for extra bases. Chase Headley hit a solo home run in the fourth, his sixth of the season, and Peter Ciofrone tripled ahead of Ambres' hit.
Las Vegas (20-21) scored both of its runs in the third inning. John Lindsey drove in Angel Chavez from third with a groundout, and Andy LaRoche later scored from third on one of Portland's four errors.
A Beavers error helped the 51s put runners on second and third in the ninth, but they were stranded as Terry Tiffee, the PCL's leading hitter at .420, grounded out to end the game.
Tiffee, who missed the past two games with a bruised thumb, was 0-for-4 with a walk.
Mauro Zarate (1-0) got the win with two innings of one-hit, three-strikeout relief. Las Vegas starter Miguel Pinango (2-3) lost after giving up three runs on four hits in six innings.
LaRoche, Xavier Paul and Danny Ardoin each had two of the 51s' seven hits.
