51s hang on as Sky Sox score four runs in ninth
The 51s barely held off a ninth-inning rally at Colorado Springs, defeating the Sky Sox 9-8 in a Pacific Coast League game Monday.
Las Vegas (8-4) went into the ninth with a 9-4 lead after scoring four runs in the eighth, but reliever David Purcey walked Jonathan Herrera to open the ninth, then gave up a Travis Metcalf two-run homer, followed by a single by Eric Young Jr.
Rommie Lewis replaced Purcey and closed the game, but not before the Sky Sox (6-6) added runs on Mike Paulk's double and Jay Payton's ground-out.
The 51s gained control in the eighth with two home runs -- a solo shot by Brett Wallace and a three-run blast by J.P. Arencibia. Las Vegas scored five runs in the sixth, using three RBI singles, a sacrifice fly and Chris Lubanski's RBI double to take a 5-1 lead.
Brad Mills (2-0) allowed seven hits and three runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked three.
