Air Force stays grounded, tops Hawaii to gain bowl bid
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Wes Cobb scored twice on short runs, and Cody Getz rushed for 125 yards as Air Force beat Hawaii 21-7 on Friday night to become bowl eligible.
The Falcons (6-5, 5-2 Mountain West Conference) are headed to a postseason game for the sixth straight season under coach Troy Calhoun. They accepted a bid to the Armed Forces Bowl after the game.
Air Force didn't attempt a pass, relying on a ground game that's ranked second in the country. The Falcons finished with 338 yards rushing.
Quarterback Jeremy Higgins made his first start for Hawaii and directed a scoring drive to open the game. But the Warriors (1-9, 0-7) struggled after that as they lost for an eighth straight time.
Getz eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the sixth time this season. The 5-foot-7-inch running back had a 5-yard TD run early in the third quarter to snap a 7-7 tie.
Cobb added two 2-yard touchdown bursts to help the Falcons win back the Kuter Trophy, a memento many on the team didn't know existed because the schools hadn't played since 2001.
