Aztecs cruise past Utes for 2-0 start in league
SAN DIEGO -- Ryan Amoroso had 17 points, and Lorrenzo Wade and D.J. Gay scored 11 apiece as San Diego State beat Utah 72-63 Saturday for its fifth consecutive victory.
The win marked the first time the Aztecs have beaten the Utes three straight times.
Utah (10-6, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) scored the first three points, the only time it led all game, before San Diego State (12-3, 2-0) jumped to a 16-5 lead.
Amoroso scored 15 points in the first half, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that gave the Aztecs a 33-26 halftime edge.
San Diego State took its biggest lead, 60-48, with 5:11 left after Utes coach Jim Boylen was assessed a technical foul.
Luke Nevill scored 17 points and Shaun Green 13 for Utah, which had won four consecutive games.
• Brigham Young 86, Colorado State 60 -- At Fort Collins, Colo., Lee Cummard scored 18 points and Jimmer Fredette 15, leading the Cougars (13-2, 1-0) past the Rams (5-11, 0-2).
BYU outscored Colorado State 46-16 during a 15-minute span at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, building a 65-36 lead with 13:12 remaining.
Andy Ogide scored 12 points to lead the Rams, who will host UNLV on Wednesday.
• New Mexico 78, Air Force 53 -- At Albuquerque, N.M., Phillip McDonald scored 11 of his 15 points as the Lobos (10-7, 1-1) took control with a 15-0 first-half run in their victory over the Falcons (9-6, 0-2).
McDonald hit three 3-pointers as New Mexico pushed its lead from 9-6 to 24-6, and Air Force never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
