Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, August 27
Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $31,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds
2 Ike Walker – Was claimed by trainer Vann Belvoir for $16K and spotted right back for $16K; suspect the goal is a quick ROI even if the horse gets claimed again.
3 Doyouknowsomething – Another horse claimed for $16K and spotted right back at the same level; it’s smart if you think you’ll hit the board and get the $16K back.
Long Shot – 4 Papa Kade
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Treasuring – Trainer Bob Baffert has a powerful uncoupled entry in here; this one had some traffic issues before closing well for third place.
7 Jade Princess – This is the other part of the Bob Baffert uncoupled entry; caveat emptor, this one was heavily favored in her career debut.
Long Shot – 6 Shakti
Race 3 –1 mile, Purse $27,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Sinfully – Was claimed two races ago by trainer Peter Miller and returned to turf; that didn’t work out at all so he’ll try the main track once again.
3 City State – Trainer Mike Pupye has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; the other horse is George’s Main Man, the longer odds price of the two.
Long Shot – 4 George’s Main Man
Race 4 – 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $50,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Sweet Profit – Was aggressively placed in last off the claim and she ran a really good race; with today’s drop in class, she is a dangerous foe with these.
6 Pearl de Vere – When Rafael Bejarano is up, you always have to look twice; tepid morning line chalk, she ran well in two turf sprints recently.
Long Shot – 4 Mark of a Gem
Race 5 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $44,000, Maiden claiming $80,000, 2-year-olds
5 Autumn Blitz – Like that this one has prepped in NoCal while training over the Golden Gate Tapeta synthetic surface; should be dead fit for this effort.
7 Hank the Tank – Morning line favorite is a FTS from trainer Peter Miller; he is fighting tooth and nail for the trainer title, so every starter counts.
Long Shot – 4 I’m Not Bullish
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $45,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
9 Housemaker – Must overcome an onerous parking lot post; James Graham has been working hard and it’s paying off, I still think he can make it here.
2 Kyankes – Claimed by trainer Bob Hess and spotted nicely to win; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal to the cause.
Long Shot – 5 Showcase Winner
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Swiss Cheese – Looks like a clever claim by Steve Miyadi; clever in the fact it was a FTS from the Bob Hess barn who absolutely airballed in debut.
8 All Run – Tepid chalk in a really wide open affair; switched over to the barn of trainer Richard Baltas, which should be a good thing.
Long Shot – 9 Gold Treasure
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
7 Bussjaeger – Trainer Bob Baffert actually does pretty well with MSW babies dropping into maiden claiming; they win, but nearly all are not worth taking.
5 Rickles – Woke up with a much improved effort when dropped in for a price tag; has a real puncher’s chance if he can improve a step or two.
Long Shot – 2 Moose Skowron
Best Bet - 3 Treasuring (race 2)
