Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, Sept. 7
September 6, 2015 - 11:26 pm
Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 7 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
8 Waymond Boyd – This Bob Baffert baby has been cold on the board in both career starts; showed solid improvement second time out and figures to be a major factor.
6 Statesman – FTS has remarkable pedigree by Candy Ride out of the dam Tranquility Lake; he is related to multiple stakes winners so the sky is the limit.
Long Shot – 7 Marvelous Max
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Boompa – There are many class droppers in the wide open route race; it’s to be expected at this time of year with 2 meets at Los Alamitos until Dec. 26 arrives.
7 Fancy Shoes – Tepid chalk in a difficult leg 2 of the final Pick 5 at Del Mar; on Sunday the Pick 5 came back $38K, which is monstrous for a 50-cent based wager.
Long Shot – 4 Prodigious
Race 3 – 5 furlongs (turf), Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
4 One of the Greats – Among 5 FTS in the field, this one has worked bullets for trainer Peter Miller; he is battling tooth and nail for the trainer’s title.
10 George Zip – Another FTS, this one gets a key vote in Rafael Bejarano to ride; he’s been highly effective when teamed up with this trainer Mark Pupye.
Long Shot – 7 Tirpitz
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, $80,000 Pirate’s Bounty, 3-year-olds and up
12 Big Macher – Suspect this is a reputation pick as he begins his preparations for a possible start in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint; has a huge SoCal summer last year.
2 Cherubim – Has been gelded since his last start; suspect the ultimate equipment change will help him focus on racing, part of an uncoupled entry for Philip D’Amato.
Long Shot – 5 Glacken Too
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Nahem – Is protected off the claim by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; he is involved in a high intensity trainer race with Peter Miller, every win counts.
12 Unusually Green – Tepid 9/2 favorite in an incredible wide open race; it ends the Pick 5 and starts the Pick 6 with a carryover in excess of $142K.
Long Shot – 1 Somethings Unusual
Race 6 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
5 Seaside Glory – Part of an uncoupled entry from Jerry Hollendorfer; HOF Mike Smith has his choice of Hollendorfer mounts and decided to ride this Speightstown filly.
9 C. C. Zipp – Other half of the Jerry Hollendorfer uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; it is truly amazing how often the longer odds of the two seems to come in first.
Long Shot – 6 Part of the Charm
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
10 Award It – When in doubt I’m going with a Tapit filly trainer by HOF Richard Mandella; he has used Flavien Prat first call this meet with enormous success.
3 Sassy Ashley – With so many MSW races on the card and full of FTS, today’s wagering is absolutely fraught with danger; you need either tea leaves or good clocker reports.
Long Shot – 1 Eileen’s Girl
Race 8 – 7 furlongs, $300,000 Del Mar Futurity, 2-year-olds
5 Nyquist – Could not have looked more impressive in winning the Best Pal; the team of Paul Reddam, Doug O’Neill and Mario Gutierrez raced I’ll Have Another.
7 Blameitonthelaw – This is a good looking son of Blame who won his MSW debut in handy fashion; has the pedigree to run all day but faces a tiger today in Nyquist.
Long Shot – 3 Swipe
Race 9 – 1 mile (turf), $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, Fillies, 2-year-olds
9 Imflatoutsweet – Broke her MSW in a mile MSW on grass; it was not a fast time, but she did it nicely for the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer and Rafael Bejarano.
1 Gomo – Same trio that raced Nyquist in the Del Mar Futurity come right back in here; loves the rail draw in a 2-turn mile on grass, will save all of the ground.
Long Shot – 5 One Last Shot
Race 10 – 6 furlongs, Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
10 Unforgettable U – Edwin Maldonado has had a rough meet, but can end it on a high note; with 5 wins and 16 seconds, he’s had tough breaks or been out ridden late.
1 Glory – Gets large class relief from a pair of graded stakes for this simple condition race; is cutting back in distance so expect a stalking rail trip.
Long Shot – 9 Discatsonthesquare
Best Bet - 5 Nyquist (race 8)
Del Mar Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/4/$33.80; Long Shots, 10/1/$17.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 665/155/$1,054.40; Long Shots, 328/47/$589.80; Best Bets, 38/16/$67.20
