Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, September 6
September 5, 2015 - 11:04 pm
Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Audra – Ran like a green horse in debut, broke slowly, trailed early, then passed tired horse late; figures to improve in second career outing.
6 Lily Kai – Tries a regular dirt course for the first time; first three races have been on grass, the last was a route so I do like the cutback angle.
Long Shot – 1 My Silver Cat
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 American Blend – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this new career low; Edwin Maldonado could use a win in the worst way, trainer John Sadler will help him.
7 Black N Beauty – A ship and win candidate which has been a strong angle at Del Mar for years; trainer Henry Dominguez is among the best on the New Mexico circuit.
Long Shot – 5 Noble Kent
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, $80,000 CERF Stakes, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Baruta – Second best to the good filly sprinter Taris in the Rancho Bernardo; this is class relief from a grade 3 stakes to an easier group.
4 Ben’s Duchess – Ran a career topper in a gutsy nose win last time out; key will be if she can repeat the race or even improve by a another step.
Long Shot – 1 Uzziel
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Ipray – Was left in another zip code last time when second to Kristinite; can’t fault her for the margin, she surely has a large edge over these survivors.
10 Summer Veil – Claimed by trainer Adam Kitchingman for $25K and dropped down tonight for $16K; either that’s a red flag or a desperate search of victory.
Long Shot – 2 Feel the Charge
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
1 Second Summer – Ran a solid second last time and now gets a big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano; love the rail draw in a 2-turn mile race on grass.
3 Mixio – Flavien Prat continues to excel and with that comes more stables and better horses to ride; he’s been locked into the Mandella family barns that’s for sure.
Long Shot – 6 Ususualy
Race 6 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Devoted One – Trainer Philip D’Amato has an uncoupled entry and they both look equally dangerous; your edge over me will be in seeing the tote board action.
9 Spindle – Trainer Peter Miller is in a hot race with Jerry Hollendorfer for the trainer title; he is throwing everything he has out there in search of winners.
Long Shot – 1 Bellamentary
Race 7 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), $250,000 Del Mar Derby, 3-year-olds
2 Prospect Park – His win in his turf debut in the La Jolla was absolutely breathtaking; this Tapit glided over the stuff and has found a new career path.
6 Om – He used to be the only horse to defeat American Pharoah until Keen Ice in the Travers; this is a nice colt with a lot of early speed, put him on the engine again.
Long Shot – 3 Soul Driver
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Skip Tony – Tepid chalk got my vote because he is shipping down from Golden Gate for Jerry Hollendorfer; horses racing and training over Tapeta are dead fit to go.
9 Got Even – Trainer Peter Miller will have simple instructions for Martin Pedroza, send until you get the early lead; has the most early gas and should utilize it.
Long Shot – 1 Just Kidding
Race 9 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), $200,000 Yellow Ribbon, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Queen of The Sand – Very interesting to see newcomer James Graham get such a high profile mount; he is a good rider who looks to me like a “poor man’s” Garrett Gomez.
6 Prize Exhibit – This may be the most wide open stakes race of the Del Mar meet; if you are live in the Pick 4 and/or Pick 6, I hope you have multiples in play in here.
Long Shot – 5 Blingismything
Race 10 – 1 mile, Purse $40,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 China Prince – Claimed by trainer Doug O’Neill for $50K and dropped in for $25K; either he made a bad claim or really wants to chalk up another win on the meet.
4 Tulira Castle – Claimed last out by trainer Ron Ellis; if you’re like me, I really enjoy his banter on TVG as he offers a sharp trainer angle that is hard to come by.
Long Shot – 2 Saint Dermot
Best Bet - 2 Prospect Park (race 7)
Del Mar Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 22/5/$32.80; Long Shots, 11/1/$10.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.20
