Horse Racing: Today at Los Alamitos, September 17

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 – 5 furlongs, Purse $12,000, Claiming $6,250, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Irish and Lucky – This is an odd field where the claiming price is $6,250, but no horse ran for that high a price tag in last; slight edge to Ramon Guce in here.

1 Dream Serenade – The rail got real good on Saturday and Sunday; run this race with these horses 6 times, you would probably get 6 different winners.

Long Shot – 5 Royals Roycing

Race 2 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 2-year-olds

2 Line of Doom – Trainer John Brocklebank has brought in a number of 2-year-olds this summer and all of them are for sale, one way or another; need not be much to compete.

5 Little Mustard – FTS debuts for a $30K price tag; tells me two things, one is he probably isn’t much racehorse, but secondly he doesn’t have to be to compete in here.

Long Shot – 4 Swiss Missile

Race 3 – 5 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming 420,000, 3-year-olds and up

8 Pop Pop’s Pizza – Ran well enough last time where a repeat race might just be enough to graduate with these slowpokes; if he moves forward a step, look out.

2 Xerxes – Claimed last out by trainer Vann Belvoir; the angle here is he ran a strong race two back where that effort, if repeated, would also defeat these.

Long Shot – 4 Senor Pegasus

Race 4 – 5 furlongs, Purse $12,000, Claiming $6,250, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Charlotte R – Ran two miserable races at Del Mar, but was good before that; the angle in play is the competition was harder and she may not have liked the track.

7 Pocketfullofgreen – Was well overmatched in last in first race off the claim by Bob Hess; severe class drop can only help her chances, adding blinkers on too.

Long Shot – 1 Travel Free

Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Starter allowance $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

1 Basmati – Been claimed in each of his last two starts; is a consistently quick horse who seldom throws in a bad one.

5 Buckleberry Grey – The claim put in last time was voided so trainer Doug O’Neill gets another chance; his race two back if repeated would absolutely crush these.

Long Shot – 3 Devil Rising

Race 6 – 5 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

1 Buff Dude – Only horse in the field to have a previous start; showed a lot of improvement in start number two, will need to move forward even one more step.

3 Discreetlyhumorme – Among the 6 FTS in the field; your big edge over me will be in seeing the tote board action on who is live and who is not.

Long Shot – 6 Dixie Caravan

Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $16,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up

6 American Act – If you can draw a line thru his last turf debacle, his resume looks a whole lot better; he is obviously a nibbler, but then all of these are.

5 Hidden Zensation – Tepid chalk in another wide open affair; I’ve enjoyed this meet despite the big class drop from Del Mar, I find the racing just as interesting.

Long Shot – 3 Surfer Moon

Race 8 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

1 Bussjaeger – Bob Baffert cull drew a good post considering how much better the rail was on Saturday and Sunday; Martin Garcia has tactical speed as a usable asset.

10 Glory Bound – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Craig Dollase is adding blinkers on too, expect some improvement.

Long Shot – 7 Small Town Shuffle

Best Bet - 1 Bussjaeger (race 8)

Los Alamitos Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/3/$23.80; Long Shots, 8/2/$27.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Los Alamitos Totals - 66/19/$149.40; Long Shots, 33/7/$84.60; Best Bets, 4/3/$12.40

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #7 Defoe Street (8/1) in race 2 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Little Miss Julia ran out at Belmont Park. Stats - 139/94/$708.50; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
