Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Mar. 7
March 6, 2015 - 10:55 pm
Post Time Noon
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
9 Sheer Talent - Parking lot post is fine in this elongated sprint; chance to stalk the pace and come grinding in the stretch.
2 American Act - Second start off the claim by Michael Pender; showed good improvement in last, these are clearly his friends.
Long Shot - 3 Triunfo
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
5 Alfiero - Tiny edge in an extremely difficult heat; taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming.
10 Tizapalooza - Another taking a big class drop from MSW to maiden claiming; has been well bet throughout his career for Marty Jones.
Long Shot - 2 Matty’s Tribal
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
4 Emyvale Court - Ran huge in her debut at a rich 22/1 odds; won’t get that today, she’s favored in a repeat try down the hill.
9 Revenue Virginius - Ran third behind the chalk last time out; that was her grass debut and she showed speed and moxie throughout.
Long Shot - 10 Screaming Skylar
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
5 Never Ends - Has run two fast races but been second in both tries; lost to really good ones, should be her day to graduate today.
2 Cafetiere - Was off slowly in her career debut, but ran on well for fourth; loses her rider to the chalk, but Tyler Baze is a fine sub.
Long Shot - 9 Miss Centerfold
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
10 Pulling G’s - Has started poorly in his last 2 starts; last was a real clunker because he didn’t finish either, much better than that.
9 I B Mike - Ran great first race off the claim by Mark Glatt; is aggressively raised in class which shows a lot of confidence.
Long Shot - 7 Kill Shot
Race 6 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
1 Hug and a Kiss - Was well regarded when favored in her U.S. debut; should move forward for Simon Callaghan and save all the ground too.
12 Fresh Feline - Big rider switch to Victor Espinoza for the money shot; she is a Kitten’s Joy so has a high ceiling on the turf.
Long Shot - 7 Zanbo
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles, $400,000 San Felipe, 3-year-olds
3 Dortmund - Unbeaten colt from the Bob Baffert barn; this one and American Pharoah are top dogs on many Kentucky Derby top 10 lists.
6 Prospect Park - Live Derby colt from the Cliff Sise barn; after seeing what Art Sherman did last year, Sise is one to root for too.
Long Shot - 2 Ocho Ocho Ocho
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf), $75,000 China Doll, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 She’s a Big Winner - Has won both her grass starts down the unique hillside course; now tries 2-turns but I love her true grit to win.
5 Curlin’s Fox - Logical chalk was no secret in her career debut; typical Mike Smith measured win in debut, she looks like the nuts.
Long Shot - 8 Bobbi Grace
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, $250,000 San Carlos, 4-year-olds and up
1 Chitu - Bob Baffert colt has settled in as a 1-turn sprinter; suspect he can win at 2-turns but under perfect conditions.
4 Conquest Two Step - Took advantage of a suicide speed duel in last to cruise to victory; may not see the same set up this afternoon.
long Shot - 7 Wild Dude
Race 10 - 1 mile (turf), $400,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile, 4-year-olds and up
8 Summer Front - Give him credit for losing by 2-lengths in the Breeders’ Cup Mile; this is a classy hard trying turf miler.
3 Winning Prize - He ended last season on a downer, but ran some special races early on; defending champion of the Kilroe Mile.
Long Shot - 10 Ring Weekend
Race 11 - 1 1/4 miles, $1 million Santa Anita Handicap, 4-year-olds and up
5 Shared Belief - Would be quite an upset if he does not win; he may not have to leave SoCal until the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland.
6 Moreno - He has back class numbers to match the chalk with his very best effort; has one way of going, on the engine and non-stop too.
Long Shot - 12 Catch a Flight
Best Bet - 5 Shared Belief (race 11)
Santa Anita Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$31.20; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 689/184/$1,162.20; Long Shots, 346/49/$485.40; Best Bets, 42/15/$67.20
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #4 Big Red Charlie (8/5) in race 8 at Fair Grounds. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Tradesman ran second at Gulfstream Park paying $4.60 to place and $3.00 to show. Stats - 33/24/$152.50; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
