Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, May 16

Post Time 11:30 a.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

1 Seek Safe Harbor - Drilled an overmatched field in last; she has back class where a repeat performance is not out of the question.

6 Erte - Subtle class drop can make a world of difference; nothing wrong with betting on Aaron Gryder, the man still has it.

Long Shot - 5 Worthy Grapes

Race 2 - 7 furlongs, $75,000 Angels Flight, Fillies, 3-year-olds

2 Tara’s Tango - Another nice looking young filly from the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; with her pedigree could be any kind.

5 Fantastic Style - Bob Baffert filly got run over late in the tough Beaumont at Keeneland; not sure this group is any easier.

Long Shot - 6 Ben’s Duchess

Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

1 Synnin - Third start off the claim by Doug O’Neill; not thrilled with the rail down the hill, but he has no early speed anyway.

2 Brave Act - Almost shocking that Rafael Bejarano is still in SoCal on Preakness day; with all the stakes, he had nothing going there.

Long Shot - 8 Atta Boy Pete

Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Sky Mega - If you’ve read my comments over the years, you know how I like the rail at one mile on turf or dirt; short run to the turn.

3 Gracie Ragazza - Has been stuck at this O/C $40K level for a few starts; key for me is she remains very competitive.

Long Shot - 5 Marycasey

Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

2 Ink Well - Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this bottom rung; has a dirt race three back that is fast enough to beat these.

6 Lute It Up - Key angle for me is he is a first time gelding; like the cutback in distance too, he is capable of a sizeable upset.

Long Shot - 11 Stepsun

Race 6 - 5 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter handicap $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

8 Twelve Folds - Claimed by Art Sherman off a sharp second; last year at this time Sherman was in Baltimore with California Chrome.

4 Lucky Student - Claimed by Bill Spawr off a sharp victory; has won 3-of-6 starts in Arcadia so this is her preferred race track.

Long Shot - 5 Peppy Bolly

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

4 Charming Starlet - Has had many chances, not the kind of horse you typically see Rafael Bejarano ride; must be sitting on go.

9 Scuti de Patuti - There is a good chance the hillside turf races will come off; it’s been raining in SoCal the last two days.

Long Shot - 2 Missy Mouse

Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

12 Forbidden Command - Outran her 21/1 odds in debut with a solid second; Peter Miller has been blistering hot of late in SoCal.

9 Mum’s Forest - FTS also from the Peter Miller barn; key for me is this is an uncoupled entry, one of them figures to win this.

Long Shot - 3 Cuddle Alert

Race 9 - 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

5 Suzy Malibu - Tiny edge in the hardest race on the card; when in doubt you have to use a horse ridden by Rafael Bejarano.

3 Imwiththeblonde - Speedy sort figures to utilize her best asset; Edwin Maldonado is a good send jockey, simple tactics here.

Long Shot - 8 Shapely

Race 10 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

2 I’ll Wrap It Up - Hard to believe he is winless in 14 turf starts; shows how maudlin the field is because I’m still picking him to win.

9 Sir Macho - Bill Spawr is always a danger, especially at 6/1 odds; has dirt form should this race come off the grass tonight.

Long Shot - 6 Neptune’s Spear

Race 11 - 6 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

14 Say’s Who - You don’t see many #14 horses winning anymore; mainly because very few fields in North America have 14 horses in it.

4 Wild Caroline - Been away since breaking her maiden at Del Mar; she likely faced a tougher group then than she does today.

Long Shot - 3 Rock N Bunny

Best Bet - 2 Ink Well (race 5)

Santa Anita Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 12/5/$27.20; Long Shots, 6/1/$10.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Meet Totals - 210/55/$329.60; Long Shots, 103/16/$208.40; Best Bets, 13/6/$24.60

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #8 Watsdachances (6/1) in race 9 at Pimlico. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Include Betty ran second at Pimlico paying $5.40 to place and $3.40 to show. Stats - 69/45/$332.70; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
