Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Oct. 23
October 22, 2015 - 9:21 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Derby Glass – Part of trainer Doug O'Neill uncoupled entry; this half will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano and figures to come grinding in the stretch.
5 Gunslinger – This is the favorite part of trainer Doug O'Neill entry; key angle could be racing as a first time gelding.
Long Shot – 4 Gold Treasure
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $55,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Never Ends – Battered an overmatched group in last by 9 widening lengths; if she repeats her race, she would win for fun again.
1 Gloryzapper – Chance for a jockey James Graham early daily double; despite winning twice with blinkers on, trainer Philip D'Amato is taking the blinkers off.
Long Shot – 3 Tiz Kissable
Race 3 – 6 ½ furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $55,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Intoxicating Move – Was claimed two races back for $50K and tried in a restricted stakes last out; has a solid hillside turf course record, which is a good thing.
4 Sayes So – Chalk has a chance to be lone early speed if breaks right, sent hard by Alex Solis; will be aided by the turf rail out 15 feet.
Long Shot – 2 Doodetta
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
8 Mor Spirit – Must overcome a parking lot post, but showed a lot of ability in a well bet career debut; part of a 3-horse uncoupled entry for trainer Bob Baffert.
1 Urlacher – Showed good improvement in last when third facing some of these; I really like the rail post in a 2-turn mile race on turf or dirt.
Long Shot – 4 Nightly News
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $36,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Zanbo – Has an above average turf resume exemplified by how many times she gets claimed; tactical speed to sit a nice trip for Rafael Bejarano.
8 Agustina de Aragon – Fancy name for a mare who was running for $20K not long ago; she has gotten better and showed enough to get claimed by Richard Baltas for $40K.
Long Shot – 7 With a Twist
Race 6 – 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds
5 Classic Gent – Interesting move by trainer Peter Miller; he won last time for $32K and is now entered for $16K, a red flag for most but Miller likes to win races.
8 Tiz Jolie – If you've followed me over the years, you know how much I like cutback horses; this one should fit well in an elongated sprint from a parking lot post.
Long Shot – 7 Kenjiislucky
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 Hobbits Hero – This is the kind of horse Rafael Bejarano likes to take back off the pace; if he does that he'll somewhat minimize the difficult post position.
9 Back to Bako – Last time he ran for $32K he won going down the hillside turf course; has a solid turf resume with a lot of coming over Arcadia grass.
Long Shot – 2 Anythingscookin
Race 8 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Kiss My Face – Nearly overcame a parking lot post 11 in last to enjoy graduation day; gets a big rider switch to Kent Desormeaux which signals intent.
9 Seaward Cottage – As I've written many times before, when Rafael Bejarano sticks around for the finale, pay attention; this one has early speed and a top jockey.
Long Shot – 2 Bolt Up
Best Bet - 5 Classic Gent (race 6)
