BYU tops TCU, takes sole possession of first

PROVO, Utah -- Trent Plaisted scored a career-high 27 points as Brigham Young beat Texas Christian 83-72 on Wednesday night.

The Cougars won their sixth in a row and pushed their home winning streak to 43.

BYU (18-5, 7-1 Mountain West Conference) took over sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference with its victory and UNLV's 81-73 loss at Utah.

The Cougars used a 9-0 spurt midway through the second half to push the score to 69-49. The Horned Frogs (11-10, 3-5) could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Bishop Gorman High School graduate Jonathan Tavernari had 20 points and five assists for BYU, which shot 60 percent.

Ryan Wall led TCU with 14 points.

• San Diego State 49, Air Force 38 -- At San Diego, Cheyenne High School product Lorrenzo Wade had 14 points as the Aztecs defeated the Falcons (12-9, 4-4 MWC).

Former Green Valley Billy White added eight points, six rebounds and three blocked shots for San Diego State, which moved into a second-place tie with UNLV.

Air Force's Tim Anderson had a team-high 12 points.

• Wyoming 78, Cal State Bakersfield 53 -- At Laramie, Wyo., Mikhail Linskens scored 23 points and Brandon Ewing 19 to lead the Cowboys (9-12) past the Roadrunners (7-16).

Tyson Johnson added 12 points and Joseph Taylor 12 rebounds for Wyoming, which opened the game with a 22-6 run.
