Canyon Springs’ late TD pass upends Desert Pines

Canyon Springs quarterback Kevion Glenn picked the perfect time for his first complete pass of the second half.

Glenn found a wide-open Ladarrell Mongkholtham on a post pattern for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 left to lift the Pioneers to an 18-16 road victory over Desert Pines on Thursday night.

Glenn's pass came on fourth-and-4 and completed an unlikely comeback drive that was fueled by a bizarre Desert Pines decision to fake a punt.

The Jaguars led 16-12 and faced fourth-and-5 from their 26. Instead of punting the ball and trying to hold onto the lead, Desert Pines went for a fake, and punter Tui Poutasi's pass was incomplete, giving Canyon Springs the ball with 2:31 to play.

The Pioneers (1-2, 1-0 Northeast League) managed just 5 yards on three runs before Glenn's touchdown pass. He finished 4-for-9 for 58 yards with one interception.

The Jaguars (0-3, 0-1) had a final desperation drive, but Canyon Springs' Diamante Luna picked off a fourth-down pass to seal the win.

Desert Pines had taken the lead on Leon Hayes' 29-yard touchdown run with 19.8 seconds to go in the third quarter. It was the second TD run for Hayes, who finished with 159 yards on 18 carries.

Donnel Pumphrey rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries to lead the Pioneers.
